Matching an ATM or ITM transaction to video used to mean searching paper receipts for the date and time, then finding the footage separately in a video management system (VMS). What is an ATM electronic journal (EJ)?
An electronic journal is a digital, time-stamped log that ATMs, ITMs (Interactive Teller Machines), and TCRs (Teller Cash Recyclers) generate automatically. It records every transaction processed at the device, including:
- Transaction type
- Card number (PAN)
- Date and time
- Dispense amount
- Sequence number
- Error events
When a cardholder disputes a transaction, a cash discrepancy turns up, or law enforcement requests evidence, the EJ is the first place investigators look. The hard part has always been connecting what the EJ says happened with video of what actually happened at the machine.
Why manual EJ-to-video correlation slows investigations
Without a unified system, an investigator has to pull the EJ entry, note the timestamp, log into a separate video management system, find the right camera, scrub to the right moment, and hope the footage hasn't been overwritten.
